What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are thin coatings that are painted onto the chewing surface of the tooth in order to protect the tooth from decay. Created from tooth-colored acrylic, sealants are a simple yet effective way to prevent tooth decay. The dental sealant “seals” the deep grooves and pits on the tooth. Our dental sealants in Kimball, Michigan, work to prevent tooth decay by:

  • Forming a barrier to protect the tooth from plaque, acids, bacteria and food particles that contribute to tooth decay
  • Creating a smooth surface on the tooth, which is easier to keep clean

Do I need dental sealants? Does my child need dental sealants?

Our gentle dentists, Dr. Scott Ferguson, may recommend dental sealants for children when their permanent molars come in, which is generally between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. Adults may also benefit from dental sealants if their teeth are especially prone to decay or if they are interested in an added measure of decay prevention. The process for applying dental sealants is fast and painless; the sealant is simply painted onto the surface of the tooth, where it bonds to protect it.
